CPD for OTs - Telehealth Home Assessments

The Your OT Tutor Journal Club - The Journal Club you've been waiting for!

The details you need to know...

1. What article did we discuss? We reviewed and discussed an article about a mixed methods study exploring the benefits and feasibility of completing videoconferencing home visits in addition to the standard practice of using data gathered via interview and photos, to inform discharge planning for older adults in hospital. Videoconferencing was conducted with a caregiver who was within the client’s home. The study was conducted in Canada and published in 2022.

2. What ‘Research Fundamentals’ tip was covered in this session? We covered an overview of what mixed methods and feasibility study designs involve and how they may be helpful for translation of research knowledge into practice for OTs.

3. What were the key points from the article critique? Five key questions were considered. The article was found to be from a trustworthy source and it was recent enough to be relevant to current practice. The author’s credentials suggested they were qualified to comment on this topic, and the suggestions they made were relevant to Westernised healthcare settings such as Australia. Their key recommendations mostly aligned with other information and advice currently available in the literature, and overall, it was judged to be a relevant article to apply to clinical practice.

4. What were some of the key take home messages from the discussion? Overall there were many benefits to completing virtual home assessments compared to just interviews and photos alone, including more accurate, specific recommendations, better rapport building with clients and caregivers, and caregivers and OTs were more confident that the OT was receiving accurate information. There were also disadvantages, with the time taken to prepare for the session and to educate the caregiver on how to use the telehealth advice adding additional time to the session. In this setting it wasn’t felt the benefits outweighed the time required, however further research was recommended.

5. How are OTs going to use what they learnt in this session? Attendees planned to further explore existing checklists available for telehealth readiness, and to invest more time in developing resources to assist their clients to prepare for telehealth sessions. Further resources and online learning opportunities were also shared within the session resources.
