1. What article did we discuss? We reviewed and discussed a review paper based on a literature review, lab goniometer measurements, and client case reports, exploring the benefits for power seat elevation for wheelchair users. The findings were presented using the ICF framework and primarily focused on benefits experienced by adults with neurological diagnoses. The paper was published in 2022 and drew on research evidence from 2008-2021.
2. What ‘Research Fundamentals’ tip was covered in this session? We covered the importance of doing a ‘dirty search’ (e.g. YouTube, Google) before completing a database search of peer reviewed journal articles, to enhance your understanding of unfamiliar topics.
3. What were the key points from the article critique? The YOTT Key Appraisal Questions checklist was used. Overall, it was written by authors with highly relevant expertise, and it provided recent evidence. Any OTs working with adults within a community caseload were likely to find the content highly relevant to their caseloads, but readers were reminded there may be an element of bias towards reporting favourable outcomes, as the paper was written by a wheelchair manufacturer; further research to explore other literature is therefore recommended.
4. What were some of the key take home messages from the discussion? It was emphasised that the majority of clients are likely to benefit from power seat elevation, even those with a high level of functional impairment, so it should be considered for all trials. It is important to explore the benefits both in the home and community, and to consider less obvious benefits (e.g. for communication, line of sight). OTs discussed how the ability to do even small tasks independently can significantly benefit a person’s quality of life. OTs should use photos, videos and outcome measures to capture these benefits in a way that can be understood by funding bodies.
5. How are OTs going to use what they learnt in this session? OTs were planning to explore outcome measures such as the WhOM and COPM as a way of capturing evidence during trials, as well as remembering to consider the less obvious benefits that seat elevation can have for clients.

Feedback on the online course: The OT Guide to Completing a Functional Capacity Assessment:
I personally found this course as an amazing clinical CPD
course! For a clinician currently working in this practice setting. The content
was easy to follow and very comprehensive. I found the course extremely
beneficial in further developing my skills in FCA writing. The course materials
and resources offered will further develop my skills in FCA information
gathering, writing and collaboration with relevant stakeholders throughout the
process. The self-paced online platform was easy to navigate, informative and
positive allowing me to consolidate my learning throughout course progression.
By far one of the best online CPD content I have completed thus far as an
Occupational Therapist.
Feedback on the support and resources available through Your OT Tutor:
Clare was amazing at providing me with the information I needed. Not only she was incredibly approachable and replied to my email straight away, Clare also offered to schedule a phone call at a time that suited my busy schedule to discuss my query further. In a time when things were getting overwhelming for me, Clare's support was truly invaluable. Her dedication to providing occupational therapists like myself with professional resources, updates on essential OT practice topics, and advice on supervision and mentoring is precious and truly admirable.
Big thank you Clare for all the support and the massive effort she puts into making Your OT Tutor which is so helpful for us OTs, regardless of our experience levels. Keep up the fantastic work, Clare! You are making a real difference.
