Learning Library Highlights: Quick tips for hospital OTs

May 07, 20255 min read

The Your OT Tutor Learning Library continues to grow – more resources and more members! In this edition of the Learning Library Highlights I’ll tell you about the new resources, including another guest contribution, along with an exciting announcement that you won’t want to miss.

This edition’s focus topic is ‘Quick tips for hospital OTs’ – there are lots of resources already in the Library that are relevant to hospital OTs, but in this edition I’ll point out some of the best (including a super special bonus).

New additions

From me you can access:

  • Download – An example of how to document the results of a standardised cognitive assessment (like a MoCA or MMSE).

  • VideoHow do you do an OT hospital initial assessment? This is a summary of the key things you need to know when doing an initial assessment with an adult in hospital (but keep reading this newsletter to find out about a special opportunity to watch a full webinar for free!)

From my guest contributor you’ll find:

Strengthening communication for people with dementia – Thrive Aged Care Consultants

Kate Lamont (OT) and Kathy Kirby (RN) are the Directors at Thrive Aged Care Consultants. With over 40 years of combined experience, both share a passion and are committed to supporting organisations that provide care for older people. They have generously provided a webinar recording which will show you some key strategies for communicating with people with dementia. But they don’t just show you what to do, they explain the science behind why it works (in a very easy-to-understand way). If you love this webinar, make sure you check out all the other training opportunities available through Thrive Aged Care Consultants – there are plenty of links in the Library!

Focus topic: Quick tips for hospital OTs

We’ve had a special for NDIS OTs, now this one is for the hospital OTs.

There are loads more resources in the library that will be helpful for OTs working in a hospital setting, but here are some of the best to get you started:

  • Download: Hospital OT initial assessment – this information gathering template will help you ask the important questions to determine the goals for discharge.

  • Download: Documentation Examples – here you can find some examples of how to write up an initial assessment and functional mobility assessment for an inpatient in hospital.

  • Video: What is the Modified Barthel Index? This video will give you a snapshot of some key tips about what the MBI is, and how to use it, then keep watching for the next Learning Library video which shows you where you can find a free online MBI calculator.

  • Video: When you don’t know the answer to your client’s question – When can I go home? Will I get better? We’ll often get tricky questions and sometimes we won’t know the answer, but how can we handle this so our patients don’t lose complete faith in our ability to help them? This video shows you how.

  • Webinar: Effective clinical handover using ISBAR – In hospitals we need to pass on information quickly, clearly, and to many different health professionals. In this webinar you’ll find out how the ISBAR framework makes this easy!

If these resources are helpful and you’d like to learn more, check out the online courses, supervision and team training available through Your OT Tutor.

So, what’s the exciting news?

This edition is one for the hospital OTs, so I’ve got something extra special for a limited time only. From now until Sunday the 11th of May at 11.59PM, you can access one of my paid products for free! It’s a webinar recording from the YOTT Connector paid membership where I show you how to do an OT hospital initial assessment! There is also an extra bonus download that will help you explain the OT role to your patients.

But be quick – by the 12th of May it will disappear from the Learning Library and it will only be available via my paid memberships.

If you’re reading this after the 12th of May, here’s where you can find it in the memberships.

Would you like to add your own resource to the Library one day?

All you need to do is fill in the EOI and tell me about your resource, and I’ll send you the T&Cs. The key point is you need to have a resource (video, webinar, download) that you would be happy for people to freely access via the Library, and in return you’ll get your own little marketing landing page and a plug in my socials and newsletters (including this one!). PLUS this cool badge to add to your website or socials.
