I grew up in a small country town and went to the local high school where there were only five people in my Year 12 class. The result - I got good at being self-directed and have a passion for rural healthcare.
I had never met an OT when I applied to uni (I almost chose being a speechie!), but the variety in the profession meant I didn't have to have any idea exactly what I wanted to do with my life at that point (which was lucky, because I didn't!). There was (and is) so much you can do with an OT degree!
I'm a proud #OTNerd - I love learning, research, quality improvement, and conferences, and am on a secret mission to convert you all into #OTNerds! This stuff doesn't need to be boring or overwhelming, so my goal is to find a way to share this view with other OTs.
You'll find me on Instagram and Facebook, but in true #OTNerd style, you'll find my best stuff on LinkedIn. I share regular tips, resources, CPD opportunities, and the occasional post for a bit of fun. I'm approaching 8000 followers, so if you're not one of them, what are you doing with your life ;)
A love collaborating with other OTs! There are so many awesome OTs out there doing amazing things, so wherever I can I'll share their work and look for opportunities to work together - not everything needs to be a competition! Get in touch if you've got an idea that we could work on...
At the moment I'm doing Your OT Tutor all by myself - I'm the website guy, your course tech support, the content creator, course presenter, and marketing guru. It means life's busy, but if you do reach out, it will 100% be me answering your questions.
Life is a bit of a juggle! Besides running Your OT Tutor, I also have a small clinical caseload working with adult NDIS participants, and work as a sessional academic for a university. This variety allows me to keep up-to-date with what students are learning and what issues clinicians are facing, so that the support, resources, and courses I provide are as helpful as possible.
I'm a mum to two kids who believe sleep is for the weak and that there is nothing that can't be built out of a cardboard box and sticky tape. While work is important, my kids are also important, and occasionally if you reach out for a call or a meeting there could be some little people in the background. They're pretty cute though, so hopefully you'll be able to forgive any interruptions.
Some random fun facts that others may not openly admit, but... I like Star Wars and Harry Potter, rock music and classical, I can play the piano and eat with my cutlery in the 'wrong' hands, but I'm not awesome at finding enough time for exercise and sleep. I'm also not a fan of dancing, and I don't really drink alcohol (not against it, just don't like the taste), so yes, I'm a nanna that prefers a cup of tea and a night watching movies rather than partying hard. It's all good though, my kids still think I'm cool ;)
Starting Your OT Tutor has allowed me to meet lots of awesome people. I'd love to help everyone that reaches out, but at the end of the day, I recognise that the best person won't always be me. If I can't help you, I'll do my best to put you in touch with someone who can.
If you're still reading, now you know lots about me. If you think I could be the right fit for you, keep reading to find out even more reasons for why you should work with me.
Over 15 years' experience working as an occupational therapist and still providing clinical services to clients - I'm up to date with the challenges experienced by therapists today.
Extensive experience as a clinical educator within university and clinical settings - I understand everyone learns differently and can tailor my approach to suit your learning needs.
Calm, encouraging approach to teaching - I'm friendly and approachable so you can feel comfortable to ask any 'silly questions' without judgement.
Dedicated to helping you succeed - If I don't have the expertise you need, I'll help you find someone who does. I've thought about the gaps that often come up in other OT training and try my best to deliver content that is practical and easy to apply.
Proven dedication to achieving high-quality outcomes - I have experience presenting at international and national conferences and have published my work in a peer-reviewed journal.
Understands life is busy! - I'm a working mum myself so understand the importance of making learning as accessible and efficient as possible so you can fit it into your own busy schedule.
I was honoured to be announced as a finalist for occupational therapist of the year at the Allied Health Awards!
It was fantastic to be named alongside so many outstanding OTs, including the winner Chris Pearce.
Thank you to everyone who supports my work through following me on social media, signing up for my webinars, or buying my courses.
I've got lots more exciting ideas planned that I can't wait to share with you!
Clare, with this course you've really set the industry standard. I've completed just about every course on FCA for OT's out there and this is by far the most in-depth, presented in such a systematic and clear way - the effort you've put into making this course is abundantly clear, and honestly I'm so grateful that you've created this to kindly share with your professional network. This course gets a solid 5/5 for me - thank you so so much! :)
Anonymous Occupational Therapist
Clare has done a fabulous job with spearheading 'Your OT Tutor', a journal club that has really helped me stay up to date with the current evidence on topics directly relevant to my practice. Her approach is comprehensive yet practical, given how time-poor clinicians often are, and I am very much looking forward to our 2023 sessions. I highly recommend Clare to other OTs - those starting out as well as others who are more established in the profession - she is an absolute asset to both.
Natalie J. - Occupational Therapy Practice Owner
As a busy practice owner, I’ve absolutely loved having this resource available for my new grads . Even though I’ve got plenty of my own guides and sample FCA reports to share with them , what I lack is time to sit down and go through these step by step to make sure they truly understand the process. The 8 hours worth of online learning has been a massive investment for me and a valuable resource for my team. Thank you Clare Batkin!
Angie C. - Director and Occupational Therapist
I highly recommend Clare Batkin, known as 'Your OT Tutor,' for her outstanding commitment to the OT community in Australia. Through newsletters, webinars, and a journal club, she expertly supports OTs of all levels and also supports those who employ them. Clare's dedication to facilitating growth in skills and knowledge is unparalleled, reflected in her mission to 'help occupational therapists to LEARN, GROW, and EXCEL.' Her expertise in how to best support OT students during placements in almost unparalleled in Australia. Equally impressive is her generosity with her time, connecting people to resources and individuals that can further their careers. Clare is indeed a vital asset to our profession.
Dave Jereb - Occupational Therapist and owner - MoveAbout Therapy Services
Graduating with a Master in Occupational Therapy and deciding how to commence my career is both exciting and overwhelming. Your OT Tutor has been a veritable lifeline in managing this transition with support, confidence and practical professional resources that I can apply immediately across multiple settings. The courses, newsletters, journal club and Q&A sessions have allowed me to seamlessly, independently and cost effectively continue my professional development after university classes finished, during practical placements and before feeling proficient in my first OT position. Clare Batkin is warm and generous with her knowledge and experience. Her enthusiasm for building the capacity of students, OTs and the profession enables me to feel connected and inspired as I embark on my new professional journey.
